Eric J. Spitler Named Director Of SEC’s Office Of Legislative And Intergovernmental Affairs

The head of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Mary L. Schapiro, has appointed Eric J. Spitler to be Director of the Office of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs at the SEC. In this position, Mr. Spitler, who most recently served as Director of the Office of Legislative Affairs at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, will play a key role in the financial regulatory reform to come.

The SEC, battered by its failure to detect the Madoff fraud and now embattled with New York District Court Judge Jed Rakoff over a proposed $33 million settlement with Bank of America (see one of today’s earlier posts, http://www.financialfraudlaw.com/content/more-proposed-bank-americasec-settlement), needs a steady, experienced hand to work with the Obama administration and Congress.

SEC Chair Schapiro believes that Spitler is the one: "Eric has extensive experience working with Congress on federal regulatory matters and a true appreciation for how our laws impact Americans."
