#6 Top Financial Fraud Law Issue Of 2009: Hint – It’s Been Called The ‘$60 Billion Fraud’
“Health Care Fraud” comes in this year as the sixth biggest Financial Fraud Law issue of the year. Why? Well, consider these items:
- 1. A "60 Minutes” report recently referred to Medicare fraud as “The $60 Billion Fraud.”
- 2. To close a budget gap, N.Y. Gov. David A. Paterson said he is seeking to raise Medicaid fraud recovery by $150 million this coming year.
- 3. Of the $2.4 billion in settlements and judgments obtained under the False Claims Act by the U.S. government in fiscal year 2009, health care fraud recoveries reached $1.6 billion, two-thirds of the year’s total.
Health care fraud of course is of interest to all of us, as consumers and taxpayers. It’s also particularly noteworthy to doctors, hospitals, and other providers. And, of course, the focus on health care fraud means more work for prosecutors and white collar criminal defense lawyers. That’s why it comes in at #6 this year.
