Nonprofits Respond To Cuomo Report On Charity Telemarketers
In an effort to be “fair and balanced,” we’d like to point you to an article in Newsday today with some responses to the report we covered the other day by New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo criticizing excessive fees taken by for-profit telemarketers who raise money for non-profit charities. Personally, we don’t see that the response amounts to much – the Newsday story quotes the executive director of the Children’s Leukemia Research Association, which received only about $300,000 from the $1.3 million raised by a telemarketer last year, as saying, "We've been very, very happy, and we've raised a lot of money" – and rather than going to the media, we think these nonprofits should re-figure their fundraising methods. But you can make your own decision.
