Weekend Reading: Vanity Fair (On Marc Dreier) And New York Magazine (Madoff’s Victims)

Good morning! The day is just beginning, but it’s Friday and if you are looking for some weekend reading, consider this: The current issue of Vanity Fair has a very interesting and detailed article about Marc Dreier (you remember – the big scammer lawyer whose story was knocked off the front pages by revelations – five days later – of the Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme). Dreier is quoted in the article as saying, among other things, that even “good” people “can lose their way.”

One more notable quote from this article: “‘You know everyone’s theory about Dreier is that this guy went bad because he overreached financially, that he got in over his head,’” says Jerome Katz, a Ropes & Gray attorney, who had clashed with Dreier in the past. “‘I’m sorry, but I don’t buy that. I think this guy has always been bad.’”

And consider this, too: New York Magazine has a piece discussing Madoff’s victims today, including one who lost $7.3 million and started the year “working five jobs.” The article also mentions a lawsuit to be filed by Howard Elisofon of the Herrick Feinstein firm against the government for negligence, notwithstanding the sovereign immunity doctrine.

Enjoy!
