What’s Yellow And Lies? A New York City Cab, Fraud Report Suggests

What happens if someone in a New York City taxi cab gets overcharged for a ride? The person might pay $4 or $5 more than necessary. What’s the impact if that happens on 1.8 million rides? The overcharges total $8.3 million, in what the commissioner of the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission calls a “pervasive” fraud.

As discussed in an article by Michael Barbaro, “New York Cabs Gouged Riders Out of Millions,” a commission report found that taxi drivers frequently charged the wrong rates for trips in the city by pressing the wrong button on their meter. One driver is quoted as saying, “You’re driving, your fingers are small, the buttons are tiny.”
