Bush issued an Executive Order that declared a national emergency with respect to Iraq; President Bush acted under the authority granted to him by the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Adeniyi Adeyemi, a computer technician formerly employed as a contractor at the headquarters of the Bank of New York, has admitted to stealing a list of personal identifying information of 2,000 bank employees and using this information to orchestrate thefts of more than $1.1 million from charities and nonprofit organizations, among other institutions, over an eight year period. The Internet Crime Complaint Center continues to receive reports of individuals' e-mail or social networking accounts being compromised and used in a scam to swindle consumers out of thousands of dollars. Portraying to be the victim, a hacker uses the victim's account to send a notice to the victim’s contacts. Read more

Earlier this week, Alton John Smith was sentenced to serve 60 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release, for bank fraud. The sentence included an order of restitution totaling $767,709.07 payable to Wells Fargo, Security Service Credit Union, and an insurance company. Smith, who is free on bond but subject to electronic monitoring, was ordered to report to a facility designated by the Bureau of Prisons on or before August 2, 2010. Read more

The Treasury Department has sold another 1.1 billion shares of Citigroup common stock pursuant to the completion of its second trading plan with Morgan Stanley as sales agent.  To date, Treasury has sold a total of approximately 2.6 billion shares of Citigroup common stock at an average price per share of $4.03, and has received total gross proceeds of approximately $10.5 billion from the sale.  Read more

Muchael Streicer, who conned his victim out of $36,000 by posing as a rabbi promising to buy her a Torah from Israel in 2005, then fleeing the country with her money, has been sentenced to one to three years in state prison. He made restitution to the victim in the amount of $36,000.  Read more

Vlade Stojchevski has pleaded guilty to wire fraud in a scheme in which he defrauded an investor by impersonating representatives of the international law firm Dewey & LeBoeuf and a financial institution.  Read more

Joran van der Sloot, a citizen of the Netherlands, has been indicted on charges of wire fraud and extortion for soliciting money from Natalee Holloway’s mother on promises he would reveal the location of her daughter’s remains in Aruba and the circumstances of her 2005 death. Natalee Holloway was last seen alive, at age 18, on May 30, 2005, while in Aruba. Attorney Steven W. Allen has pleaded guilty in federal court in Arizona to taking part in a conspiracy to defraud the Internal Revenue Service by promoting a fraudulent offshore trust scheme to hide his clients’ income. The Securities and Exchange Commission has obtained an emergency asset freeze against a Canadian couple who, it alleges, fraudulently touted penny stocks through their Web site, Facebook, and Twitter. The SEC also charged two companies the couple control and obtained an asset freeze against them.  Read more

Robert Pagini worked for the New York State Department of Health from 1997 until January of this year as a Senior Mail & Supply Clerk. For most of that time, he was the Supervisor-in-Charge of the mailroom located in the Hedley Building in Troy. To process outgoing mail, the Department of Health maintains a mailing system machine that weighs, seals, and affixes metered postage strips to the mail that the mailroom received to send out.
